Anchor Close, Edinburgh

Anchor Close is one of the many such alleys running off the Royal Mile in Edinburgh. This one runs down to Cockburn Street and dates back to 1521. The bronze plaque at the entrance to the close reads "Anchor Tavern, howf of Crochallan Fencibles.
in close was Smellie's Printing House where were printed Burns' works and Encyclopedia Britannica 1st Edition. Parents of Sir Walter Scott resided here until 1771"
